Bargaining Team Update
TAU Bargains with WMU’s
Administration:
As has been outlined in the history of TAU, this union
was formed out of a general sense of outrage and disgruntlement,
that we as graduate students feel we are not receiving
just compensation from the university for the duties which
we are performing, let alone sufficient compensation to
live a self supporting, reasonable, and respectable, adult
life. As such we are currently in the process of bargaining
with the university for an improvement in the compensation
that we receive to a level that is more consistent with
that which is available at comparable institutions, and
is sufficient to meet our needs as graduate employees.
To this end we are pursuing a number of adjustments to
our current situation. Specifically, full tuition remission
for all graduate employees, a health insurance coverage
plan which is more in agreement with our needs, and financial
capabilities as graduate students, a minimum salary which
is more consistent with our value to the university, and
the cost of living in Kalamazoo, a robust system of grievance
resolution ending in binding third-party arbitration,
paid sick leave and paid bereavement leave to name a few.
